The Children Act

105 minutes

Directed by: Richard Eyre

In the midst of a marital crisis, Fiona Maye, a High Court judge must decide if she should order a life-saving blood transfusion for a teen with cancer despite his family's refusal to accept medical treatment for religious reasons.

Adam is three months from his 18th birthday and still legally a child. Should Fiona force him to live? Fiona visits Adam in the hospital and their meeting has a profound emotional impact on them both, stirring strong new emotions in the boy and long-buried feelings in her.

"Like so many of the movies that stem from McEwan's novels, "The Children Act" is a soulful and sophisticated adult drama that peers into the void between the beauty of ideals and the cost of living by them" - IndieWire

"The two central performances could hardly be better. Thompson works here with remarkable subtlety." - Hollywood Reporter

"The Children Act" is that rarest of things: an adult drama, written and interpreted with a sensitivity to mature human concerns..." - Variety

"A typically marvelous performance from Emma Thompson" - Variety

4 stars "The finest performance of Emma Thompson’s storied career” - Radio Times
