Victoria and Abdul

106 minutes

Directed by: Stephen Frears
Starring: Dame Judi Dench, Eddie Izzard, Michael Gambon, Ali Fazal

The extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship in the later years of Queen Victoria’s remarkable reign. When Abdul Karim, a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself. As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another that her household and inner circle all attempt to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.

The film echoes Mrs Brown (1997) which chronicled a love affair which broke all the rules: the passionate relationship between Queen Victoria and her loyal Highland servant, John Brown.

Regal customers will enjoy Dame Judi Dench’s equally remarkable performance in Victoria and Abdul.

"Dench is 82 now, but she remains the world's most formidable pixie, and in "Victoria & Abdul" she's in her element and in her snappish, showbiz-melancholy prime." - Variety

"A sorta-sequel to Mrs Brown deals effectively with another of Queen Victoria’s unconventional friendships and reprises Judi Dench’s powerful and unparalleled portrayal." - Empire

"an expectedly sensational performance from Dench" - The Telegraph

4 stars - "utterly authentic" - The Independent

"rather fun in a royalist way" - The Guardian
